The Issue
We are concerned residents of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, determined to preserve the unique character and well-being of our community. The proposed construction of data centers in our area presents serious threats that we cannot ignore. We urgently need to come together to oppose these plans and we implore our elected officials to take decisive action to protect our community.
Data centers, while essential in today’s digital world, are notorious for their extreme water and energy consumption. According to reputable sources like the U.S. Department of Energy, data centers can consume up to 3% of the global electricity supply and have a substantial carbon footprint. This level of consumption is unsustainable for Rocky Mount, a community striving to reduce its environmental impact and conserve resources for future generations.
Additionally, the noise pollution generated by the equipment within data centers can negatively impact local residents’ quality of life, leading to stress and disrupting tranquility in residential areas. Moreover, despite the perception of high-tech job opportunities, data centers typically offer limited employment benefits, often requiring only a few technical positions that do not significantly contribute to local job creation or economic growth.
Furthermore, the construction of these massive structures harms our existing infrastructure. These buildings require large parcels of land and alter landscapes, which could affect the natural beauty and the ecological balance of the region. Traffic congestion and increased pressure on road networks are inevitable, disrupting daily life and potentially leading to costly infrastructure upgrades, further burdening taxpayers.
We believe that Rocky Mount deserves better than to become a hub for industrial development that offers little public benefit. Instead of data centers, we urge our officials to consider more sustainable and community-friendly projects that align with our values and provide genuine economic and social benefits to our town.
Join us in protecting our community by signing this petition. Let’s send a strong message to our elected officials that the residents of Rocky Mount stand united in opposition to the construction of data centers. Together, we can preserve the character and quality of life in our community for present and future generations.
