The Issue

As residents of Troy, Illinois, we are passionate about preserving the small, family-oriented nature of our community that we have come to love and cherish. Recently, it has become clear that members of the Troy City Council and local officials are actively exploring or encouraging the development of a large-scale data center in or around our community, including on nearby agricultural land. While presented as an economic opportunity, this type of industrial project poses serious long-term risks to Troy’s character, environment, infrastructure, and overall quality of life.

Data centers may play an important role in the digital economy, but placing one in or near a residential, family-oriented community like Troy comes with serious downsides. These facilities require enormous amounts of electricity and water, generate significant noise, and create a substantial carbon footprint. In a community where the natural environment, open space, and small-town character are deeply valued, introducing an industrial operation of this scale would fundamentally and permanently alter the fabric of our area.

Moreover, the conversion of farmland to industrial uses undermines local agriculture, a vital part of our community’s heritage and economy. Not only would it displace farmers, but it would also disrupt the local ecosystem, affecting wildlife and residents alike.

The increase in traffic, noise, and potential pollution from construction and the operation of these centers would create an unhealthy living environment for our families. It's essential that we protect our children and future generations from such adverse impacts by prioritizing sustainable and community-friendly development.

We implore the City of Troy and Madison County officials to listen to the voices of their constituents and reject any proposals for data centers within or surrounding our community, including those on nearby agricultural lands.

It's time for us to take a stand for Troy, to safeguard our community's natural beauty and tranquility. We need development that aligns with our values, ensuring that our town remains a haven for families, agriculture, and small businesses.

Help us preserve what makes Troy special by signing this petition and supporting a future that honors our community’s character and principles.
