As a local Gloucestershire councillor, I am deeply concerned about the proposal to introduce charges for the disposal of household DIY waste at our recycling centres. I believe this change will unfairly burden residents who are already contributing to waste management through their council taxes.

Currently, the cost of running local waste and recycling services is covered by the council tax that each household pays. These taxes are intended to support all public waste management needs, including the responsible disposal of household DIY waste. Introducing additional charges would mean that residents are paying twice to dispose of the same waste. This is not only financially burdensome, but it can also discourage proper waste disposal, leading to increased illegal dumping and environmental pollution.

DIY projects are a common way for families and individuals to improve and maintain their homes. It is unfair to provide a pricing barrier that may discourage necessary home improvements, or drive responsible citizens to less environmentally safe disposal methods.

Moreover, many families are currently struggling with the rising cost of living and increased financial pressures. In this climate, it is crucial that we provide support rather than additional financial hurdles. Implementing these charges would disproportionately affect low-income households, making it harder for them to maintain their homes.

I urge Gloucestershire County Council to reconsider this proposal and keep our recycling centres accessible to all residents without imposing additional fees. We must prioritize the principles of fair and equitable access to public services and protect our environment by encouraging responsible waste disposal.
