Citizens Against Bahia Mar Fiasco
Feb 7, 2018
"We moved away from fixed-rail streetcars 50 years ago as a country." This study needs to be read by the new Commissioners because the outgoing Commissioners are either hopelessly naive, stupid or corrupt. https://www.wired.com/2017/05/detroits-new-streetcar-ok-cant-save-city Last night demonstrated the idiocy and lack of logic and common sense of a least four people that should not be representing the Citizens of Fort Lauderdale-Bruce Roberts, Jack Seiler, Robert McKenzie and Romney Rogers. This WAVE project is primarily supported by those who have been misled to believe they will profit from this fiasco. That is, the property owners and businesses in the area and those that hope to get the contracts for building this folly. The fact is that experience and evidence is that inadequate volume of ridership will never justify the excessive costs of the system. None of the people advocating this insanity would support this Project if they had to pay for it and this project would never have seen the light of day if it was dependent on private market funds instead of Obama era public subsidies. It makes NO ECONOMIC sense. The funding of this project from the county, state and federal government is not free money. Taxpayers somewhere are unknowingly paying for this boondoggle. Research has proven that these sorts of Trolley Folly will make traffic worse not better and will increase accidents, injuries and fatalities. Traffic during rush hours will prevent on time schedules. The Trolley will not be able to afford to run with the frequency or reliability to attract riders who will not patiently wait 20 minutes or more for a ride to go even a mike or two. There never will be the population Density to provide the ridership necessary for this System to survive economically. The fixed costs and the operating costs are too high. Would anyone on the dais or testifying ride this fiasco must less pay $9 per ride which is what it will cost. Justifying the system by saying that a fixed rail line will guarantee development along that line ignores the fact that the market place will already create development in that area WITHOUT the expense and disruption of the rail system. Even if the proponents are correct, system will hurt other areas in need of development where the rail line is not running. Technology is changing too fast to argue that the cost of the rails and the equipment can be justified because it will have a life of 30 years. The technology will be obsolete in 5 years but the cost of operating and maintenance will continue to go up while the cost of newer more efficient and flexible technology will go down. It is frightening to hear the Commissioners and “true believer” advocates of this system justify the WAVE by saying it is ‘just the beginning of a larger system’. We can’t afford to pay for this Trolley to No Where . Who is going to pay for a Trolley to Every Where? Then there is the argument by the genius at the DDA who says we need an electric trolley to eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels. Where does he think the electricity comes from? Then there is the issue of the cost and the potential failure of the transmission of electricity for the trolleys in an emergency. The Public is much better served by flexible independent vehicles, operating on cheaper hydrogen or natural gas, that can be rerouted to where they are needed to move people in an emergency. Ironically, we have an abundance of natural gas but there could be a shortage of more expensive electricity. There are so many other common sense reasons why the Trolley Folly is destined to fail. Why isn’t the right thing to do more obvious to these politicians?
