Matthew 7: 24-27 "But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” The “visionary” developers and City planners and the genius elected officials at City Hall are defying nature and approving a Billion $ project to be built on a narrowest portion of the barrier island and on the historically most unstable sand bar in South Florida. It was Ponce de Leon who named the Outlet to the ocean at Bahia Mar, the “New River” because it was constantly changing location with every storm. The risk of the inevitable failure and cost of this folly will be born by Fort Lauderdale Citizens and thousands of taxpayers who have loudly voiced their opposition to this Development Fiasco. For countless centuries the original natural inlet from the Everglades to the Atlantic Ocean shifted constantly between present day Bahia Cabana to Bahia Mar and Las Olas Boulevard, whenever a storm blew through. Hurricane Sandy proved that even a small storm’s tidal surge could easily inundate and wash out a portion of the barrier island especially where it is at its narrowist-Bahia Mar. That is why insurance carriers require that the marina be vacated whenever a hurricane approaches. Who is going to insure this project and at what cost? Another reason why no one in their right mind would buy or rent an expensive condo in this most vulnerable of barrier island locations. At low tide, less than 570' separates the surf side of the Atlantic ocean from the marina seawall and the entrance to Bahia Mar. The ground level elevation of Bahia Mar is only a few feet above sea level. In September, during Hurricane Irma, AIA was completely buried under sand which made it impassable and took a week to remove and reopen AIA. What are the Developers and the City Commissioners thinking...or smoking?
