Citizens Against Bahia Mar Fiasco

Oct 23, 2017
Tate and Friends are proposing to build a small city on little more than a sandbar on the most narrow part of the beach in all of South Florida. The site of Bahia Mar is less than 100 yards from the Atlantic Ocean on the east and 100’ yards to the south from the historic natural mouth of the New River named by Ponce De Leon because the inlet was constantly moving because of storms.
Why does this matter? A direct hit by category 4 hurricane like the one that hit Puerto Rico could generate a 15’ tidal surge that could wash out A1A on either or both sides of Bahia Mar, creating a new inlet. A different type of hurricane like the one that hit the Houston area and stalled there for three days generated an epic amount of rainfall which caused catastrophic regional flooding. Such a storm dumping 30”-50” of rainfall in Broward County would cause massive flooding. Floodwaters seeking an exit to the ocean, coupled with high tides and wind will head for the coastline’s most vulnerable, lowest and most narrow location-Bahia Mar. This scenario is not far-fetched.
It is ironic that the Tate proposal was submitted in September in the midst of two of the most devastating Hurricanes in recent history, which, but for the grace of God, did not hit Fort Lauderdale head on. Next time we may not be so lucky.
It is shear idiocy and arrogance that these developers and City Officials think the Laws Of Nature will not eventually make Bahia Mar Ground Zero.
