Reintroduce Skirts in Bishop O'Dowd School Dress Code
Reintroduce Skirts in Bishop O'Dowd School Dress Code
The Issue

Especially in the fall and around this time of year, it gets extremely hot in our school in Oakland, CA. I know some students were wearing skirts that were too short, but it's unfair to make everyone suffer in the heat.
In recent years, several schools have been re-evaluating their dress codes to ensure they're fair for a positive learning environment. For instance, local surveys show that students perform better when they're comfortable, and districts that adjusted their dress codes to include more weather-appropriate options reported higher student satisfaction.
The removal of skirts as an option directly affects female students, who now have fewer choices for comfortable, appropriate school attire.
We’re asking our school administration to reconsider the outright ban on skirts and work with us to find a fair solution. Our main goal is to bring back the option to wear skirts in general, not just as part of a uniform, but as a legitimate, appropriate choice for students.
However, if the concern lies in enforcing consistent dress code standards, we’re open to a compromise. A uniform skirt with a standard fingertip length or mid thigh guideline could offer a balanced solution that maintains both appropriateness and comfort.
By adjusting the dress code to include catholic school uniform skirts, we can ensure that all students, regardless of gender, can remain comfortable during the hot fall months while maintaining a neat and respectful appearance.
