Reinstating On-the-Job Training (OJT) in the STEM Curriculum: Enhancing Hands-On Learning

Reinstating On-the-Job Training (OJT) in the STEM Curriculum: Enhancing Hands-On Learning

The Issue

We, the undersigned STEM students of Oriental Mindoro National High School of Project Rescure [Reliable Emergency Services for Communication in Urgent Response Efforts], respectfully submit this petition to express our concern regarding the recent change in the curriculum, where a capstone subject replaced On-the-Job Training (OJT). We strongly believe that OJT is crucial for our educational, and professional development and somehow may help in times of calamities. We urge the school administration to reconsider this decision.

  1. Together with the importance of real-world experience while academic knowledge forms the foundation of our education, hands-on experience is equally important in preparing us for our future careers. The OJT program may allow us to gain valuable exposure to real work environments, helping us apply our theoretical knowledge in practical settings. Without OJT, we risk missing out on the necessary skills and insights from working directly with professionals in our field.
  2. Bridging Theory and Practice. STEM students need both theoretical understanding and practical experience to succeed in their chosen careers. The OJT may provide an opportunity for us to directly connect what we learned in the classroom with actual industry practices. This experience will allow us to build essential skills, such as problem-solving, communication, and teamwork, critical for professional success.
  3. Preparing Students for Future Careers In today’s competitive job Market. STEM students must be well-prepared for the workforce. By reinstating OJT, we are not only academically prepared but will also be equipped with the skills and experience necessary to succeed in professional roles. This would give us a stronger foundation as we transition from school to our careers.
  4. Training students for future calamities as some STEM student careers are related to securing our life and nature like doctors, biologists, environmentalists, geologists, and such. The OJT provided an opportunity to give STEM students knowledge through professionals teaching them how to prevent damage to life and nature. This event may instruct us in the skills and knowledge to become knowledgeable in critical times of calamities.

We, the undersigned, kindly request the reinstatement of the on-the-job training (OJT) as part of the required curriculum for Grade 12 STEM students. We believe that practical experience is needed for our academic growth and future success. The removal of OJT as our immersion will limit our opportunities to gain the hands-on skills necessary for entering employment.

We respectfully ask the school administration to review this change and take immediate action to restore OJT for the benefit of all STEM students.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
