Subject: Petition Protesting the Removal of a Cat Shelter, Food and Water at IS 303, 501 West Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11224
On June 15th, 2023, the cat shelter housed in the parking lot of IS 303, at 501 West Avenue, in Brooklyn, for the past 10 years, was heartlessly destroyed by the new principal. Four senior cats, who had been trapped, neutered, and released to that property over 10 years ago, lost their homes and source of food and comfort. In the ten years these 4 cats have been at this site , there have been no incidents whatsoever. This area has been maintained in a scrupulously clean and orderly manner. As a member of this community, and a passionate advocate for animal welfare, I am appalled and dismayed that the new principal ordered that the cat shelter, that has been supported by previous principals and the custodial staff of IS 303 for the past 10 years, be destroyed and removed.
I have spent years of my life and thousands of dollars of money, caring for, feeding, and building homes for these sweet, harmless senior cats. This cat shelter has provided a safe haven for these four aging feral cats, ensuring their well-being, regular meals, and necessary medical attention. The shelter’s dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly to spay/neuter, vaccinate, and care for them.
According to Animal Abuse at 311 in NYC, neglect or abuse of any animal in the City of New York State is defined as "a situation where a person causes unjustified harm, pain, or suffering to an animal or neglects an animal's care by not providing it with proper food, water, medical care, or suitable shelter." The principal at IS 303 has violated the animal cruelty laws set forth by NYC. https://portal.311.nyc.gov/article/?kanumber=KA-02224
According to the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, New York State law defines animal cruelty as a situation where a person causes unjustified harm, pain, or suffering to an animal or neglects an animal's care by not providing the animal with proper food, water, medical care, or suitable shelter. https://www.animalalliancenyc.org/needhelp/cruelty.htm
The principal has engaged in animal cruelty at the highest degree by removing access to food, water and shelter for these four senior cats.
We, the undersigned, request that the cat shelter be reinstated and food and water be allowed for them to survive . Finally we pray, that the cats that knew IS 303 as their home, are safe from harm after the Principal uprooted and cast them away like garbage. Please look at updates thank you for you support. More update please review updates.
Sincerely,
Suzanne Hernandez, and Petitioners.
