VIA Rail has announced that they plan to stop VIA Rail services at Guildwood Go Station on October 25, 2026. I, Councillor Paul Ainslie for years have relied on the VIA Rail service at Guildwood Station as a vital connection to other parts of Ontario and beyond. This station has been more than just a point of transit; it has been a lifeline, providing us with convenient and accessible transportation for work, family visits, and leisure. However, the recent decision to discontinue this crucial service threatens to disconnect us, impacting our daily lives and the vibrancy of the Scarborough community.

Guildwood Station serves a significant population in Scarborough, which is one of Toronto's most diverse and densely populated areas. The local reliance on this station is evident. A 2016 survey indicated that Scarborough residents make up more than 25% of Toronto’s commuters using intercity rail services. Eliminating service at Guildwood not only limits travel options for thousands but also places an undue burden on those who depend on public transportation for their livelihoods and daily necessities.

The decision seems to overlook key considerations such as public need, accessibility, and environmental benefits. Replacing train journeys with longer car commutes contradicts efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change. Public transportation plays a fundamental role in achieving our climate goals, and maintaining service at Guildwood Station is essential for a sustainable future.

Moreover, discontinuing service could have unintended economic repercussions. Guildwood Station helps drive local economic activity, benefiting businesses and creating development opportunities. A reduction in accessibility could deter investment, affecting long-term growth prospects in Scarborough.

I urge VIA Rail to reconsider its decision. Practical solutions to maintain the service at Guildwood Station could include evaluating alternative scheduling, enhancing marketing efforts to boost ridership, and exploring government subsidies or partnerships to offset operational costs.

Preserving this transportation link aligns with community interests and sustainability goals. Together, we must advocate for the connectivity and convenience Scarborough deserves.
