The Issue

Three years ago, we made a conscious decision to enroll our child at Kirkby Stephen Grammar School (KSGS) based on the knowledge that triple science would be available as a GCSE option. This offering was not merely an academic subject but a significant part of our child's future educational path. Recently, our confidence and trust in this decision have been disrupted due to an unexpected announcement.

Just two weeks before the students were to make their GCSE option choices, KSGS delivered the alarming news that they would be removing triple science and instead, only allowing the combined science option for the current Year 9 students. This decision not only limits the potential academic achievements of our children in science but additionally has reduced the number of GCSEs they can obtain from 9 to 8 and severely undermines the specialised paths that many students have been aiming for, particularly those with a keen interest in the sciences.

Triple science forms the foundation for several science-based A-Levels and subsequently, university courses and careers. By not offering this path, KSGS is inadvertently disabling a trajectory that could be pivotal for the futures of young, aspiring scientists.

We understand the challenges of curriculum planning and resources in schools, but it is imperative that student interests and aspirations are given the utmost priority. Reinstating triple science would not only benefit the academic framework of the students who have chosen KSGS with this option in mind but will demonstrate the school's commitment to being transparent and reliable in fulfilling educational promises.

We urge KSGS and Cumbria Education Trust to reconsider their decision and provide the current Year 9 students with the opportunity to study triple science, thereby keeping the educational integrity and options intact. Please sign this petition to support the immediate reinstatement of triple science at Kirkby Stephen Grammar School for the benefit of all students involved. Your voice is crucial in this movement.
