Reinstate TikTok in India for Cultural Expression and Digital Innovation

Reinstate TikTok in India for Cultural Expression and Digital Innovation
The Issue
In June of 2020, my world was disrupted. The Indian government took the decision to ban TikTok, along with 58 other Chinese apps, over national security and privacy concerns. This decision not only abruptly split the vibrant community of 200 million active users[1] in India but also undermined the democratic right to free expression and creativity in the digital age.
TikTok had become a bustling platform for content creators of all ages, from all corners of India. It fostered joy, understanding, and collective learning. Today, it has left a gap that no other app can fill. The ban on TikTok has significantly impeded the growth of many talented individuals who had found a platform to showcase and monetize their creativity.
While we understand the gravity of national security and privacy, we argue the need for a better solution than an outright ban - solutions like improved data privacy measures, or third-party audits of smartphone apps.
In the wake of these developments, we are petitioning the Indian Government to reconsider its blanket ban on TikTok in India. Cultural expression and digital innovation are pivotal in today's world. Let's remember this and make a call for the reinstatement of TikTok. The creativity of millions should not be dampened by this ban.
