Reinstate the Weapons Carry License: Protect Georgia Communities and Campuses
The Issue
In recent years, Georgia has shifted towards more relaxed gun laws, such as the permitless carry policy. This change allows any individual deemed "legally eligible" to carry a gun without the necessity of obtaining a Weapons Carry License. While the Second Amendment upholds the right to bear arms, it is imperative to balance those rights with public safety concerns.
The absence of a required Weapons Carry License means there is less oversight of who is carrying firearms in our communities. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2020 alone, there were over 1,500 firearm deaths in Georgia, showcasing a significant public safety concern that should not be overlooked. Enforcing a Weapons Carry License will help mitigate risks by ensuring that only those who complete safety training and pass thorough background checks and mental health checks are permitted to carry concealed weapons.
Furthermore, states that have maintained stricter gun control measures generally report lower incidences of gun violence. For example, Connecticut, which requires permits for both the purchase and carrying of guns, has one of the lowest gun-related fatality rates in the country, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
Reinstating the Weapons Carry License in Georgia is not about infringing on constitutional rights. It’s about ensuring that responsible gun ownership comes with accountability and proper safeguards. By requiring licenses, we can help ensure that guns do not fall into the hands of individuals who may pose a threat to the safety of our communities.
Our Demand (Call to Action):
We call upon the Georgia General Assembly to introduce and pass legislation to reverse permitless carry and fully reinstate the mandatory state-issued Weapons Carry License for anyone carrying a firearm in public spaces.
Join us in urging state legislators to prioritize public safety over unrestricted gun access and restore the requirement for a Weapons Carry License in Georgia. Our aim is to protect the citizens of Georgia and ensure a safer community for future generations. Please sign this petition to make a change for the better.
