The Taliban in Afghanistan has issued a new edict prohibiting girls from attending universities. This means that girls and women in Afghanistan are now banned from receiving any form of education. This is in addition to the 450-day ban on millions of girls' education in secondary and high schools, as well as the ban on their travelling, participating in sports, using bathhouses, visiting parks, and working in most places.
This is a deeply concerning development and a major setback for the progress of women's rights in Afghanistan. It is imperative that the international community speak out against this discriminatory and harmful decision and use all available resources to pressure the Taliban and their allies to reverse this barbaric decision.
We urgently call upon the UN Security Council to reinstate the travel ban on Taliban leaders until such time as they cease their oppressive and inhumane restrictions on women in Afghanistan.
