The Issue

I have been a resident of Johns Island for almost 20 years. I remember the days when it was a far more rural community. Today, Johns Island has evolved into a bustling, populous area. The population has soared by over 150% with minimal regard given to infrastructure development.

In 2010, a crucial aspect of our daily commute was tampered with when the middle lane of Folly Road, which allowed for right turns, was remodeled during an intersection renovation. This change has led to congestion and long hours of waiting, especially for those of us who need to make a right turn at this intersection.

As a local, I spend frustrating hours every week, waiting in this snaking line of cars—an ordeal that could easily be assisted by restoring the middle lane's original functionality. The growing population of Johns Island deserves a sound and efficient road infrastructure that takes into account the area's demographic explosion.

We need to bring this to the attention of the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). It is their responsibility to ensure that road layouts and policies align with the realistic needs of the population. The reinstatement of the right turn option in the middle lane could make a significant difference in easing daily traffic congestion.

We strike this call to the people of Johns Island, requesting you support this petition to put pressure onto the SCDOT. Together we can spur the necessary change for our beloved neighborhood. Please, share this with your neighbors and friends, and sign this petition. Let us demand a safer and more efficient commute for us all.
