Reinstate the gymnastics program at Iowa State University

Reinstate the gymnastics program at Iowa State University
The Issue
The recent discontinuation of the gymnastics program at Iowa State University has a profound impact on Iowa State students, athletes, alumni, and supporters who have been part of this historic team’s 50+ year legacy. This program has not only provided invaluable opportunities for skill development and competitive success for student athletes, but has also been a source of pride and community for the university and its alumni.
As Cyclone alum, and decorated NCAA gymnastics coach KJ Kindler recently stated: "Collegiate gymnastics is thriving nationwide. It is one of the fastest-growing women’s sports in the NCAA, with rising participation, expanding programs, and surging fan engagement across the country. Women’s gymnastics student-athletes consistently rank among the highest academic achievers in all of college athletics. They graduate at remarkable rates. They maintain some of the strongest GPAs in the NCAA….They commit themselves fully in the classroom, in the gym, and in their communities…To diminish a sport built on achievement, integrity, and academic distinction is to overlook the extraordinary young women who define it.”
Iowa State University’s gymnastics program has a long-standing tradition of excellence, having produced numerous talented athletes who have represented the school on both the national and international stage, winning conference titles and making numerous NCAA Championships appearances. The program's sudden removal both undermines these achievements, while also depriving current and future students of these opportunities; which are essential for personal and professional growth, discipline, and the overall pipeline for the sport.
Reinstating the program will reaffirm Iowa State's dedication to the success of women's sports, and allow Iowa State to offer a diverse and inclusive athletic environment. It is paramount that the university administration reconsiders this decision and allocates the necessary resources to support these athletes, as their dedication and hard work contribute significantly to the university’s reputation and vibrancy.
