The Issue

In the fall of 2025, the Ottawa School Boards made the decision to cancel their recycling program, which has raised significant concerns among parents, teachers, and students in our community. The discontinuation of this program undermines our collective efforts towards sustainability and environmental education.

Recycling programs in schools not only help reduce the carbon footprint by diverting waste from landfills but also educate students on the importance of environmental responsibility. This practical education is crucial in shaping the environmental advocates of tomorrow.

Canceling the program also sends the wrong message to children about the importance of community and collective action in combating environmental issues.

Previously, the school boards had resorted to a local vendor for the Blue Bin Program but due to unspecified reasons the contract was not renewed.

We call on Ottawa's city counselors and the Ottawa School Board to:

  • Give clear reasoning as to why the contract with the original vendor was terminated
  • Explore working with a different vendor
  • Prioritize sustainable learning in our schools
  • Collaborate together to include the collection of Ottawa' school boards blue bin recycling in the current organizations responsible for the City’s Blue Bin Program, Circular Materials and Miller Waste

Join us in urging the boards to reinstate the recycling program and commit to shaping environmentally conscious future generations. Sign this petition to demand change and make our schools greener spaces for learning and development.
