Reinstate the American Sign Language Program at the University of Tampa

The Issue

The University of Tampa's decision to discontinue the American Sign Language (ASL) program has deeply affected the student community. This program provided vital communication skills and facilitated a better understanding of the Deaf community, thereby fostering inclusion and respect for diversity.

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) states that ASL is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf. Furthermore, as a vital means of communication for many individuals - deaf or hearing - its importance in developing communication skills, cognitive abilities, and understanding cultural diversity is acknowledged worldwide (NIDCD, 2020).

By eliminating this program, the University of Tampa denies its students the opportunity to connect with the deaf community even though Tampa Bay has one of the largest Deaf communities in America.

Therefore, we call on the administrators of the University of Tampa to promptly reinstate the American Sign Language program, thereby reaffirming their commitment to inclusive education and cultural diversity. Please sign this petition to show your support for the return of the ASL program.
