This petition was started by the school's decision to take away our lunch passes but the petition originates from the unjust handling of the current year 12s. We have had multiple times where our school life has been tossed around and indirectly diminished.
In year 7 we were starting anew in high school, dependant on the first year to give us experience in high school life. Instead, we were knocked into online learning and given mountains of work to do during one week every week over multiple classes. People with learning difficulties or a more in-person learning style suffered and people who could do the work felt burnt out. When we returned to in-school learning it was evidently hard to regain whatever we learnt during the minimal time we spent at school before lockdown.
Now, in year 12, along with the ban on walking to the local shops, we have to stand and watch as the school café that we were told was a privilege to solely year 12s now gets given to year 11s when we had to wait for year 12 to have access. I believe this is a step in the right direction but it doesn't provide any positives to year 12s who had to be patient and were excited for the year 12 only café experience.
Furthering the topic of experience. The removal of lunch passes is also removing the adult responsibilities that came with it, such as time management, money management, and overall mental wellbeing; The café was a lot of students' place to calm down and escape the pressure of school life just at lunch, it helped a lot of people stay focused in class due to it being their method of self-calming. These experiences carry us into university and helps us get ready for adult life in a more secure environment.
In conclusion, this isn't just about the lunch passes but how marooned us year 12s were in our high school life, and how unfair it is to take something from us that provided more benefits than the negatives that appeared. year 11s and/or at least year 12s should be able to have lunch passes back to prepare them for the higher responsibilities of university and to also provide them with a more safe environment to handle these responsibilities.
I hope that you continue to share and promote this petition as so we get our message out more.
