The Issue

The East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) is considering a drastic decision to eliminate a vital student organization that embodies the democratic values central to the educational process. As a former student and a dedicated member of the Mesa community, I am compelled to take action and express my concern over this development.

The elimination of this student organization not only deprives students of a structured platform to express their voices, but it also undermines the principles of student empowerment and participatory governance enshrined in our statutes. According to Arizona Revised Statutes § 15-351, every high school is legally mandated to establish a school council, with students actively participating in school governance. This statute is unequivocal in its demand: student representation in school governance is not a mere formality, but a legal requirement.

Removing this outlet for student representation at EVIT poses a risk of alienating students and ignoring their valuable input and priorities. Students have unique perspectives and insights that are beneficial in shaping educational policies that directly impact their lives. Their involvement in school councils ensures that they are not passive recipients of education but engaged stakeholders shaping their learning environment.

Allowing students a voice in educational administration is crucial in fostering an environment of mutual respect, understanding, and community engagement. Studies show that when students are given opportunities to participate in decision-making, their school experience is enriched, leading to improved educational outcomes and a heightened sense of responsibility.

I urge the administration of EVIT to reconsider this decision. Reinstate the student organization and fulfill the statutory obligations to your students. By doing so, EVIT will not only comply with state laws but will also stand by its commitment to inclusivity and student leadership development.

Let us band together as a community to ensure that every student's voice is heard and valued. Sign this petition to advocate for the reinstatement of student representation at EVIT and affirm the right of students to participate actively in their educational journey.
