Reinstate sex offenders on the Michigan registry

The Issue

As a devastated parent who's witnessed the horrors of child molestation firsthand, I am appalled at the recent decision to remove over 20,000 sex offenders from the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry (M.I.P.SO.R.). These individuals have committed unspeakable acts against the most vulnerable members of our society—our children.

Imagine the unimaginable. These predators walked among us, committed heinous crimes, and then were stripped of their deserved punishment. My own child was a victim of such unforgivable acts, and the thought that these criminals are now free from the watchful eye of the law is unacceptable. Each offender made a conscious choice to harm innocent children; they earned their place on the registry. Removing them from it is a disservice to every parent, every community member, and most importantly, every victim.

The M.I.P.SO.R. serves as a crucial tool in ensuring community safety. It alerts neighbors, parents, and schools to the presence of potentially dangerous individuals within our vicinity. This registry provides a sense of security that, despite the trauma endured, there is a mechanism in place holding these criminals accountable. How can we claim to protect our children if we voluntarily dismantle the systems designed to safeguard them?

The decision to remove these offenders undermines the trust of every Michigan resident. Statistics demonstrate that sex offenders have a high recidivism rate, and the community deserves to have access to this critical information for their own protection. According to a study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the re-arrest rate for released sex offenders is at 5.3% in the first three years, reflecting the need for vigilant monitoring and continued public awareness.

Removing offenders from the registry may have been seen as a move towards rehabilitation, but it overlooks the fundamental right of citizens to know who resides in their neighborhoods. Reinstating these offenders on the registry is not just about retribution; it’s about prevention and the proactive measures necessary to protect our children from future harm.

I urge you to consider the safety and well-being of the community. Reinstate all removed offenders on the M.I.P.SO.R. and restore both the confidence and security of Michigan families. Let our voices unite in a demand for change, one that prioritizes the innocence of children above all else.

Please join me in calling upon Michigan legislators to take immediate action. Sign this petition to emphasize the urgent need for reinstating these offenders on the registry, ensuring our children remain safe in the communities they deserve to grow up in.
