Our latest Freedom of Information (FOI) request to South Lanarkshire Council has now been officially acknowledged.
This new request asks the Council to confirm:
1️⃣ Whether any other school route within South Lanarkshire requires pupils to walk along an exposed, unlit 60 mph road, with no access to help, limited or no phone signal, and no public transport alternative.
2️⃣ What guidance or contingency plans are in place for pupils if schools close during the day due to snow, ice, or other severe winter weather, when walking home would be unsafe on untreated or frozen footpaths.
📩 The Council has confirmed receipt (via Education Resources Adviser Molly Magee) and that the request will be processed under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002, with a formal response due within 20 working days.
This FOI will determine whether any other school children across South Lanarkshire are expected to face the same level of risk as Sandford pupils — walking over two miles in dark, freezing, high-speed traffic conditions with no lighting or safety barrier.
If no other community faces this, the Council must explain why Sandford is being treated differently and why cost-cutting is being placed ahead of child safety.
We’ll share the full response as soon as it’s received. Thank you again to everyone continuing to stand up for fairness, equality, and safety.
