This Wednesday, South Lanarkshire Council will debate a motion calling for a review of the West of Scotland Road Safety Forum Guidance – the outdated document used to declare the Sandford–Strathaven route “safe.”

The motion highlights that:

The guidance has not been updated in at least 20 years.
Scottish Government guidance expects councils to review and adapt criteria to reflect real safety factors such as lighting, traffic, and footways.
Parents, carers, and young people across South Lanarkshire have raised serious concerns about unsafe walking routes being passed as “safe.”

👉 Cllr Elise Frame will be speaking on this motion, ensuring that Sandford’s concerns are heard directly in the chamber.

We would encourage anyone who can to attend the Council meeting on Wednesday (from 10am, at Hamilton Council HQ) to show support. Having parents, residents, and pupils present will make it clear just how many families are affected.

For those unable to join in person, the meeting can be watched live here:

This is exactly what we’ve been pressing for — a recognition that tick-box assessments aren’t enough and real-world safety must come first.

🙏 Thank you to everyone — our MSP, supportive councillors, the media, and this community — for standing behind this campaign. We’re now at 1,110 signatures and counting. Every single one helps keep the pressure on.
