I am writing this petition as a fervid believer in women's rights. I believe women should have full control of their bodies. In circumstances as devastating as rape, women should have the legal right to take the path of abortion without fear of being persecuted. It is an injustice to usurp this choice from them. Roe v. Wade, a landmark decision by the US Supreme Court, once affirmed this right. Given the severity of this matter, it is crucial we return to the principles of this ruling and reaffirm our commitment to women's rights.

In the United States, 1 in 5 women will be raped at some point in their lives. An estimated 32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year according to the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology. These alarming figures indicate how many women might require access to safe and legal abortion procedures.

The unfettered access to safe, legal abortion is not only about choice, but also about human rights. The United Nations has recognized that by seeking to restrict abortion rights, countries violate women's human rights.

By reinstating Roe v. Wade, we uphold the dignity, freedom, and rights of millions of women in our country (Source: American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology; UN Declaration on Human Rights).
