Reinstate Reading To Rover in our schools
The Issue
When my daughter started struggling with reading, it broke my heart to see how her confidence dipped. Then, our school introduced the 'Reading To Rover' program, where kids could read aloud to therapy dogs. I remember the first time she read to Jasper, a gentle golden retriever with soulful eyes that listened to her every word. Her reading skills and self-esteem soared. But now, the program has been discontinued, leaving many children like my daughter without this crucial support.
The 'Reading To Rover' initiative, previously run in Chesterland, Ohio, West Geauga Library , was a lifeline for children who needed a loving, non-judgemental partner to practice reading. Research from the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology shows that reading to dogs can increase reading fluency in children by up to 30%. This educational technique not only aids language acquisition but also nurtures a love of reading.
Our children deserve every opportunity to succeed. By reinstating this program, we can provide an enriching environment where kids build literacy skills and gain confidence. The presence of therapy dogs in our schools represents a powerful tool against reading anxiety, helping students become proficient readers and compassionate individuals.
Geauga County Library Board, we urge you to reconsider your decision. The removal of this program is a step backward in our commitment to nurturing well-rounded students. Let's bring back 'Reading To Rover' and show our kids that their educational journey is of utmost importance.
Please sign this petition to ask ,Geuaga County Library Board to reinstate Reading To Rover, ensuring that our children receive the support they need to thrive. Together, we can make a difference in their future.
