The issue

For far too long, major towns in the Wimmera region of Victoria, Australia, have been disconnected from Melbourne, Ballarat, and the rest of the state. This lack of rail service has left many residents unable to travel to essential places for healthcare, education, and employment. It's time to change this and reinstate rail services beyond Ararat, making stops in Stawell, Horsham, Dimboola, and Nhill.

The absence of rail connectivity has placed a huge burden on the residents of these towns, forcing them to rely on less convenient or costlier alternatives like long bus journeys or driving—if they even have access to cars. This situation only worsens social and economic divides, cutting the people of the Wimmera region off from opportunities that others in Victoria take for granted.

Before the V/Line services stopped in 1995, the rail connection was a lifeline. It provided easy, affordable travel options and vital economic links to larger cities. With the increasing focus on sustainable transportation and reducing carbon footprints, reinstating these rail services is a win-win situation. Not only would it promote regional development and economic upliftment, but it would also contribute to easing road traffic and reducing emissions.

Victoria’s Wimmera region is home to thriving communities with enormous potential. Better connectivity to major city centers will enhance business opportunities, improve employment outcomes, enable access to specialized healthcare, and make educational institutions more accessible.

Statistics from Public Transport Victoria show that rail services have consistently shown higher customer satisfaction ratings compared to bus services. Additionally, studies indicate that the reintroduction of rail services can contribute up to 30% in local economic growth through direct and indirect employment and commerce opportunities.

We urge the Victorian government and Public Transport Victoria to prioritize this project. Reinstating the rail services will revitalize the Wimmera region and improve the quality of life for its residents. By signing this petition, you’re supporting a realistic and much-needed transformation. Let our voices be heard for a more connected Victoria! Please sign this petition to show your support.
