Reinstate Pre-Delivery Tipping Options on Instacart and Uber
The Issue
As shoppers and delivery drivers who believe in fairness and transparency, we deeply feel the impact of recent changes made by delivery platforms like Instacart and Uber. Previously, these platforms allowed customers to tip while placing their orders—promoting an upfront and honest service. However, that practice has changed without any clear communication to shoppers, drivers, or customers. Currently, the tipping process post-delivery causes many customers to overlook this option, directly impacting our livelihoods.
This sudden change does not only affect our personal income—it affects our trust in the platforms we use daily. As part of the gig economy in British Columbia, Canada, we embraced these platforms under the impression they supported full transparency. The shift in the tipping protocol, of which we were not informed or consulted, contradicts this principle.
As per statistics, tipping amounts under a pre-tipping system are reasonably higher compared to post-service tipping (Cornell University's Center for Hospitality Research 2019). This basic feature reinstatement will significantly improve the financial stability of thousands of GIG workers in BC who primarily depend on these tips. We believe it is a win-win situation: customers can freely choose to express gratitude for good service, and we, the delivery personnel, feel our work is valued.
We are not suggesting that we deserve tips for substandard service. We simply ask that these companies reinstate their previous tipping system, allowing customers to tip at the time of ordering and they are always free to decrease or completely remove the tip if they are not satisfied with the service they received. That way, there will be transparent communication between customers, delivery drivers, and shoppers—the way it should be.
We implore these platforms to respect the people driving their success and bring back the pre-delivery tipping option. It is a small change that can make a substantial difference in our lives and the lives of many others like us.
Please sign and support our cause. Help us make our voices heard for a change that safeguards our interests while maintaining the spirit of excellent service.
