Reinstate our Town's Speed Limit to 45 MPH

The Issue

I used to drive down Jetton in Cornelius just like any other resident. Until one day, I got pulled over for going what I assumed was the standard speed limit. That's when I found out the speed limit had been lowered unreasonably. And it appears there's been a sharp increase in strict traffic enforcement since the change took place. Not only are these new speed limits unbearably slow, but they're also a stark contrast to comparable residential areas in Charlotte - despite being more densely populated, their speed limits remain unaffected. It feels unjust seeing our right to move at a reasonable speed infringed upon and our pockets targeted. Additionally, allegations are swirling that the Sheriff of Mecklenburg is unfairly targetting Cornelius on pretense of our relative privilege.

The National Motorists Association states that speed limits should be set at the 85th percentile of free-flowing traffic, meaning roadways should be engineered for the speed at which 85% of people drive at or below. It seems our town has deviated from this principle, choosing instead to exploit the situation rather than keep our interests at heart.

We urge the relevant authorities to reconsider this change. Raise the speed limit on Jetton, Bethel Church, and West Catawba back to 45 mph, a fair one based on the area's characteristics and customary driving behavior. This is not just about us drivers; it's about fairness, the right to movement, and, ultimately, the spirit of our town. Please, sign the petition.
