Reinstate Open-Age Basketball in Young NSW — Let Us Play

Reinstate Open-Age Basketball in Young NSW — Let Us Play
The issue
We, the undersigned players, supporters, and community members, call upon the Young Basketball Association (YBA) and Basketball NSW (BBNSW) to immediately reinstate an open-age basketball competition in Young, NSW.
In 2025, the senior basketball season was abruptly cut short without proper consultation or justification. Despite multiple teams ready to play, a willing host venue (PCYC), and clear community demand, the YBA:
- Cancelled the competition mid-season.
- Refunded player fees — thereby, under its own constitution, stripping players of financial membership and voting rights.
- Prioritised an Under-23 competition without offering an equivalent for adult players.
- Cited referee shortages and behavioural issues without any formal investigation, documentation, or transparency.
- Failed to present inclusive alternatives or a path forward for senior participants.
These actions are not just exclusionary — they directly contradict the stated mission of Basketball NSW, which promotes “participation, inclusion, and the love of the game.”
We believe:
- Basketball is for everyone — not just juniors.
- Decisions that affect competitions and members must be evidence-based, transparent, and procedurally fair.
- No member should be disenfranchised through strategic refunds or administrative loopholes.
We call on the YBA to:
- Immediately reinstate an open-age senior basketball competition in Young;
- Publicly acknowledge and engage with the adult playing community it has excluded;
- Make governance processes transparent — including publishing meeting minutes, complaint outcomes, and criteria used to cancel the season.
We call on Basketball NSW to:
- Actively uphold its role as governing body — not passive bystander;
- Ensure affiliated associations operate transparently, inclusively, and in good faith;
- Prevent strategic exclusion of members through governance manipulation.
This is about more than one season. It’s about the future of grassroots basketball in our community — and ensuring it remains open to all players.
