Reinstate Net Metering
Net Metering allows the common person to generate their own green, renewable energy on their own property without necessarily relying on a public grid system to feed off of. The more that people generate clean energy as opposed to burning fuel and transmitting power hundreds of kilometers, the more efficient the system becomes. Currently power can be generated at the residential and commercial level but the cost of such a system is incredibly cost prohibitive without using the electricity grid as a storage device. This type of configuration is referred to as net metering.
A reliable electricity system is the ultimate goal, it is best achieved through a combined effort of the public as well as utilities and non-utility generators.
Newfoundland and Labrador is the only Province in Canada who does not allow its people to generate their own electricity in an effective, cost efficient manner. This needs to change.
With the reinstatement of net metering in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (it was allowed until December 2012) there is a great opportunity for a new industry to start up. This new industry will bring green collar jobs to the Province, help us become a renewable energy leader in Canada and advance our Province into a future worth being a part of. An investment in renewable energy that everyone can take part in is an investment in a sustainable future.
