As a devoted volunteer for Mange Management, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact that mange has on wombat populations in Victoria, Australia.

This treatable condition, if left unaddressed, leads to a painfully slow and unnecessary death for these beloved and iconic native creatures. Mange is not only cruel but also highly contagious, posing a significant threat to the survival of wombat populations in the region.

Mange Management is a volunteer-run organisation dedicated to treating and managing mange in wombats. We treat thousands of affected wombats every year, and offer education, advice, and support to landowners, other volunteers, and the broader community.

Our goal is to empower individuals to effectively treat affected wombats, saving them from the excruciating symptoms of mange and ultimately preventing their untimely deaths.

However, despite our efforts and commitment, we face a significant challenge: lack of funding.

The Victorian State Government recently cut funding to our organisation, jeopardising our ability to continue this crucial work. Without government support, there are no official programs to manage this disease, and the repercussions of neglect will decimate the wombat populations,  and leave more individuals to die a painful and unnecessary death. 

We are calling on the Victorian Government to reinstate funding for Mange Management. This funding is essential for providing the necessary resources for distributing treatment kits, facilitating education programs, and supporting ongoing volunteer efforts. It will enable us to continue protecting and preserving the precious wombats of Victoria from a preventable and severe condition.
