Reinstate full week fall break for all students
The Issue
It came as a shock to me and many of my classmates when we discovered that our fall break would be cut short this year. I'm a student in our school district, and during a conversation with my teacher and cousin, we realized that unlike previous classes, we won't even enjoy a full five-day fall break. It felt like an immediate dismissal of our right to a balanced study-life routine, something that past seniors had embraced.
Last year's senior class was fortunate enough to graduate a full week before the school term ended. This break allowed them more freedom to prepare for future endeavors and enjoy a well-deserved rest. However, due to funding issues, our school faced financial ramifications and decided to deduct days from every grade's fall break this year. This effectively pares our rest and rejuvenation period into just three days.
Reducing the break not only feels like a punishment but also deviates from the standards set in previous years. The decision seems to undermine the well-being of students who depend on these breaks to alleviate stress, recharge, and manage other responsibilities, such as college applications and family obligations.
Academic studies consistently highlight the importance of adequate breaks for maintaining student mental health and improving academic performance. For instance, a study by the American Psychological Association indicated students with balanced schedules tend to perform better academically and have lower stress levels.
