The Issue

During the COVID-19 pandemic, schools across the country implemented free lunch programs to ensure that all students had access to nutritious meals, regardless of their financial situation. This initiative was a lifeline for many students, including myself, who found it challenging to afford or bring lunch every day. Now, with these programs discontinued, we face the harsh reality of having to go through the school day hungry, impacting our concentration, health, and overall academic performance.

Many families continue to struggle financially, and the burden of providing packed lunches or buying meals every day is an additional stressor. According to the USDA, food insecurity affects over 11 million children in the United States. This means that countless students depend on school meals as their primary source of nutrition. Eliminating the free lunch program exacerbates food insecurity and places unnecessary stress on already burdened families.

Reinstating the free lunch program is not only a matter of justice but also an investment in our future. Studies from the National Bureau of Economic Research indicate that access to free school meals can significantly improve students' academic outcomes and health. It has been shown to increase test scores, improve attendance, and even impact long-term educational attainment positively.

We urge our local and national education authorities to prioritize nutrition and education equity by restoring free lunch programs across all schools. This act will demonstrate a commitment to supporting the health and educational success of all students, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Join us in this movement to bring back free lunch for students. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a brighter, healthier future for all students, ensuring that no child has to learn on an empty stomach. Sign the petition and make your voice heard for change.
