We are calling for the immediate review and reinstatement of Fred Neiray, a senior basketball player at David Prouty High School, whose suspension has removed him from the court during a critical point in his final high school season.
This decision has consequences that extend far beyond a single game or moment. As a senior, this season represents Fred’s last opportunity to compete, to lead his team, and to be seen by college scouts. The suspension is not only ending his high school basketball career prematurely- it is potentially damaging his future opportunities at the collegiate level.
High school athletics are meant to teach accountability, discipline, and growth. However, discipline must be fair, proportionate, and grounded in context and intent. When punishment becomes excessive or career-ending, especially for a student with so much at stake, it undermines the very values school sports are meant to uphold.
This petition is not about excusing poor judgement or ignoring rules. It is about ensuring that consequences:
- Are consistent with how similar situations are handled.
- Consider intent and context.
- Do not inflict irreversible harm on a student’s future.
Fred is a student-athlete, a teammate, and a young man still learning and growing. A student-athlete who mentors the young kids, who coaches basketball to elementary students, and who is even a referee himself on the weekends when he is not at practice. Removing him from the court for the remainder of his senior season sends a message that one moment outweighs years of dedication, hard work, and positive contribution.
We are parents and community members who believe deeply in fairness- especially when it comes to to kids.
We have watched student-athletes sacrifice their time, their energy, and their childhoods to their sport. Sports give kids structure, discipline, confidence, and often a sense of belonging. For some, it’s the reason they stay focused, motivated, and hopeful about the future.
Seeing a senior athlete potentially lose everything he’s worked for- his final season, his team, and his chances to be seen by college scouts- without a fair and balanced outcome hits close to home.
This is not about attacking officials or dismissing accountability. It’s about ensuring discipline is handled with reason, compassion, and proportionality, especially when the consequences can alter the course of a young person’s life.
If we don’t speak up when something feels unjust, we allow it to happen again- to another student, another family, another community.
We respectfully call on the appropriate school, district, and athletic conference/league officials to
- Immediately review Fred Neiray’ suspension
- Reinstate him to the basketball team as soon as possible.
- Ensure disciplinary decisions moving forward are fair, consistent, and mindful of long-term impact on student-athletes.
Fred deserves the opportunity to finish his senior season on the court and to compete for his future. Stand with Fred for fairness
Please sign and share this petition to help ensure that one moment does not define or derail a young athlete’s future.
Thank you!
