Reinstate fall graduation ceremonies at Metro State University
The Issue
The culmination of years of dedication, hard work, and perseverance is fast approaching for the Class of 2026 at Metro State University. Like many of my peers, I've sacrificed numerous evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet the program graduation requirements. But now, as I stand on the threshold of this milestone achievement, we're facing the disheartening news that the Fall Graduation Ceremonies have been cancelled, impacting both our immediate and future plans.
For 2-3 years or more, depending on the individual journeys and challenges we each faced, we have envisioned crossing the stage in front of our family and friends. This moment represents not just the end of an academic journey but the beginning of new opportunities. Yet, without the fall ceremony, many of us are forced to delay such celebrations until spring. This sudden change not only disrupts personal and family plans but also diminishes the sense of closure and recognition our hard work deserves.
Canceling the fall ceremonies affects more than our ceremonial traditions—it impacts our ability to commemorate a pivotal life event. Some students have families who have planned travel, taken time off work, or coordinated other commitments around our projected graduation dates. Furthermore, others of us might not be able to return in spring due to employment or relocation, and thus would miss out on the ceremony entirely.
Considering these factors, I urge Metro State University to reinstate the Fall Graduation Ceremonies for the Class of 2026 and beyond. Here’s how it can be achieved:
1. **Allocate Resources**: By appropriately allocating time and staff resources, the university can ensure both fall and spring ceremonies are feasible.
2. **Engage with Students**: Seek feedback and collaborate with students to understand the full scope of how the cancellation impacts us and how we might work together to find solutions.
3. **Secure Funding**: Explore funding options, perhaps through partnerships or alumni contributions, that can subsidize the necessary costs to carry out the fall ceremony.
We understand logistical challenges may arise, but with thoughtful planning and a shared commitment, honoring our efforts with a fall graduation will benefit our entire community. Please sign this petition to demonstrate your support and help us bring back the fall tradition that celebrates achievements at their rightful pace.
