As a dog owner, I have witnessed the recent implementation of the XL bully ban. This has made it clear to me, and many others in the dog community, that we need a system in place to manage and regulate dog breeding and ownership. One such solution is reinstating a mandatory dog licence for breeders and owners.

The funds generated from these licences could be used to employ more dog wardens - professionals who ensure that dogs are kept under control and do not pose a threat to people or other animals. In 2018, there were only 1,500 employed across the UK (source: RSPCA), which is insufficient considering there are approximately 9 million dogs in this country (source: PDSA).

By bringing back a licensing system for breeders and owners, we can ensure better welfare for our beloved pets while also providing necessary resources for their management. It's time we took action not just as individuals but as part of the larger community of responsible pet owners.
