We, the students, parents, alumni, and members of the Westport community, are calling on the Westport Board of Education to reverse its decision to not renew the contract of Coach Russell Oost-Lievense, a decision that has deeply shaken our school and undermined the voices of those it is supposed to serve.
Coach Russ is more than just a coach. He is a mentor, a teacher, a role model, and a cornerstone of the Staples High School boys soccer program. As a respected educator and proud Staples alumnus, he has poured his heart into building not just a winning team, but a strong, character-driven culture that extends far beyond the field.
Despite overwhelming support from students, parents, faculty, and alumni, expressed in heartfelt letters, public comments, and community presence, the Board of Education voted against Coach Russ. This decision was made following a hearing marked by vague accusations, unclear reasoning, and numerous “I don’t recall” statements from administrators who failed to provide compelling justification for their actions.
This is not just about one coach. It’s about what kind of leadership we value in our schools. It’s about whether student voices matter. And it’s about standing up for educators who lead with integrity, consistency, and compassion.
The precedent set here is chilling: a well-loved coach can be removed behind closed doors with no transparent process, no clear explanation, and no accountability, even when the community stands behind him.
We urge the Board to reconsider and reverse its decision, not just for Coach Russ, but for every future educator who might be treated the same way.
If you believe in standing by the people who show up for us, sign this petition. Share it. Speak up. Because what happened to Coach Russ should never happen again.
