Reinstate Coach Kia Wright: Uplifting Copiague, everyone is welcome to stand with us

The Issue

This isn’t just about a coach.  It’s about what our girls and our community deserve.

We, the students, parents, alumni, and supporters of Copiague, are calling on the Copiague School District Board of Education to listen to the community and do what’s right: reinstate Coach Kia Wright.

Coach Wright has been more than a coach to the girls in our district. She’s been a mentor, a role model, and a steady presence in a system that often fails to prioritize girls’ sports and the development of young women of color. Her impact is undeniable from aiming to rebuild the basketball program to supporting players through life beyond the court.

The decision to remove her from her position was made behind closed doors, without transparency and without community involvement. Many of us students, families, and residents were blindsided. This is not how decisions that affect our children should be made.

We are asking the Board of Education to:

    •    Reinstate Coach Kia Wright

    •    Commit to a transparent, consistent, and fair disciplinary process for all staff

    •    Include students, families, and alumni in conversations and decisions about school leadership

    •    Publicly support equity and representation in our district, particularly for women of color in leadership roles

This petition is about more than one person — it’s about what our girls deserve, what our community values, and what we’re no longer willing to stay silent about.

Coach Wright showed up for our kids. Now it’s time we show up for her.

Sign this petition to demand fairness, accountability, and a voice for the people of Copiague.
