Reinstate Coach John Parks As Head Coach
Reinstate Coach John Parks As Head Coach
The Issue
John was informed on June 12, 2024, immediately before his departure to support and coach our athletes at the national meet in Eugene, that he was terminated as Head Coach. The schools basis for this termination are that he violated School Board Policy by writing a letter to the OSAA seeking a rule change regarding the participation of trans females in female sports and the false allegation that he encouraged and organized students and coaches to protest. In particular John was advocating for our female athletes Title IX rights and seeking Oregon adopt the same rules as the national level and the majority of other states.
John notified Athletic Director Coleman of his intention to write the letter prior to doing so, and after he wrote it Coleman told him he supported his position. At no time did Coleman advise John that this action could violate the School Board Policy.
Further the school is alleging that John was insubordinate of a directive by Athletic Director Coleman to not discuss the issue with the media or encourage protest by the athletes. At no time did John engage in any conversations with the press or encourage athletes to protest.
John is appealing this decision. We are asking the school board to immediately reinstate Coach Parks.
