The Issue

Navigating the responsibilities of being both a student and a single mum is a daily struggle for my sister, who resides in Enfield. As a dedicated student nurse pursuing her degree at Middlesex University in Hendon, she feels the pressure of having to leave her house at 5:45 a.m. to attend hospital placements that begin at 7:00 a.m. Meanwhile, her 6-year-old child starts school at 9:00 a.m.

To cope with this challenging timetable, she relied heavily on the assistance of a nanny, as formal childminder settings simply do not open early enough to meet her needs. However, the recent policy changes by the Department for Education that prevent nannies from being eligible for the Childcare Grant have added an immense burden to her already challenging situation, making a daily routine that was barely sustainable now almost impossible.

This policy is short-sighted, disproportionately affecting student parents who rely on nannies for flexible, early morning or late evening childcare. Without the financial support from the Childcare Grant, many student parents are forced into an untenable juggling act, potentially thwarting their educational aspirations and, consequently, their future careers.

In 2019, there were over 7,500 student nurses in the UK who were also parents, striving to combine their critical training with the demands of family life. Removing the financial aid which allowed these students the flexibility of using nannies threatens not only their education but could exacerbate the shortage of qualified nurses that the NHS already faces. Moreover, a study by the National Academy of Sciences found that childcare stability is crucial for the well-being and academic success of children in their formative years.

We urge the Department for Education to reconsider and reinstate the eligibility for nannies under the Childcare Grant program. By doing so, we can ensure that student parents, especially single mums like my sister, have the necessary support to achieve their dreams and, ultimately, contribute significantly to society through their chosen professions.

Stand with us in supporting Britain's student parents and help them secure the education they deserve without sacrificing their peace of mind or their children's stability. Sign this petition to advocate for the childcare options that are truly needed.
