Reinstate Charlie's Student-run Coffeehouse at Susquehanna University
The Issue
I have been a regular patron of Charlie's Student-run Coffeehouse at Susquehanna University throughout my college career. It has not only been a place for me to relax and unwind, but also a vital fundraising platform for various clubs that I am part of. The sudden unexplained closure of this beloved establishment has left many students like myself feeling bereft, disconnected, and without a place that we know we belong.
Charlie's was more than just a coffeehouse; it was the heart and soul of our university community for generations, providing an inclusive space for students to gather, study, share ideas, and build relationships. Moreover, it offered practical learning opportunities and critical income for students involved in its operation.
The importance of such student-run businesses in fostering entrepreneurial skills is well-documented. According to the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and several other groups of experts on this topic, participation in these ventures can significantly enhance students' leadership abilities, problem-solving skills, and readiness for the job market.
We understand that short-staffing may have contributed to this decision. However, we know that if the Student Government and Student Life Office makes it a priority, we can find ways to make it viable once again.
We urge Susquehanna University leaders to reconsider their decision and work towards reinstating Charlie's Coffeehouse as a student-run organization as soon as possible. This is not just about bringing back our favorite hangout spot; it’s about preserving an integral part of our campus culture that contributes significantly towards holistic student development.
Please sign this petition if you too believe in the value that Charlie’s brings to our community at Susquehanna University!
