Bryan Chu is a master educator with 24 years of experience at every level—elementary, middle, and high school. What makes him excellent at his craft is that he truly centers the students he serves in everything he does. Chu consistently challenges systems, structures, and the people who operate within them to serve children before anything else. And that’s why we are here, asking you to sign this petition demanding Portland Public Schools reinstate Bryan Chu.

Chu was placed on administrative leave from Harriet Tubman Middle School Friday, April 1, 2022. The district cited several allegations in its notice, only one of which had anything to do with Chu’s practice as an educator. That one claim—that he allegedly told a student to “shut up” with absolutely no more context provided in the letter—should not be the subject of a full district investigation. Yet it reveals the lengths to which PPS will go to justify suspending or terminating one of its most beloved, impactful, and outspoken educators. 

We want an immediate end to targeting and retaliating against Bryan Chu by Portland Public Schools, and for his immediate reinstatement at Harriet Tubman Middle School.
