We made a journey to Navajo Nation, intent on shedding light on the abandoned uranium mines and the Church Rock uranium mill disaster through a documentary. In the course of unraveling this complex narrative, we stumbled upon an unsettling reality - coverage for radiation exposure victims under the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) has expired.

RECA, a federal law of the United States, was established in 1990 to offer a formal apology and financial compensation to people who developed severe health problems as a result of the uranium mining and nuclear testing carried out by the U.S. during the Cold War. However, the protection offered by this act has now lapsed, leaving a gap in the support system for these victims.

Radiation exposure has severe and far-reaching aftermaths, resulting overwhelmingly in chronic diseases and fatality in the most severe cases; the victims of these abandoned uranium mines and nuclear tests deserve compensation. It's estimated that millions of miners, transporters, and downwinders were exposed to harmful radiation. There were 500 abandoned uranium mines just on the Navajo Nation land, affecting countless lives through the years. Our education in Navajo Nation was our personal experience, and we've since learned that there are radiation exposure victims all over the country that will be affected negatively by this political failure.

We ask you to join us in urging Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, to untable the bill and bring it back onto the floor. It's crucial that we work together to demand the reinstatement of RECA with an extended filing deadline to 2045. This extension will ensure those affected receive the compensation they deserve and help uncloak the veiled story of the radiation exposure victims.
