The Issue

As a student at Boulder High School, the recent changes to our schedule have had a significant impact on my daily life. The reduction in lunchtime has made it incredibly difficult for many of us to connect with our peers, complete our homework, and, most crucially, have a proper meal. It's an unfortunate reality that the current schedule leaves us stressed and unfulfilled throughout the school day.

This change, which cut our lunchtime to less than half of what it was, paired with extended class periods, disrupts our daily routine and education experience. Many students rely on this time as a vital break in their day to rest, recharge, and prepare mentally for the rest of their classes. Without it, we're left with no break, perpetually rushing from class to class without a moment to breathe.

Evidence shows that adequate break times during the school day are not just helpful but necessary for cognitive and emotional well-being. According to a National Education Association report, students need sufficient downtime to maintain focus and productivity. Furthermore, a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights the importance of regular meals, stating that skipping meals or eating poorly can negatively impact students' academic performance.

Our current schedule doesn't allow for the necessary "off-period" that many students used to utilize for catching up on schoolwork or taking a mental break. For those who don't have such periods available, the compressed schedule is even more detrimental. Boulder High students deserve a schedule that supports their health and academic success, rather than one that diminishes it.

We are calling on school administrators and the Boulder Valley School District to reconsider this change. Our proposed solution is simple yet effective: restore the previous schedule or ensure a minimum of a 45-minute lunch period that allows students to eat, socialize, and manage their workload effectively.

By signing this petition, you join in advocating for a restore of balance to our daily school schedule. A small change can lead to a significant improvement in the lives and successes of countless students in Boulder. Please stand with us in urging the school to prioritize the well-being of its students.
