Regulate the co-star role in SAG to ensure fair wages
The Issue
In the fast-paced world of entertainment, actors face countless challenges every day, from unpredictable schedules to fierce competition. Yet, a more pressing issue is affecting those dedicated to the craft: the disparity in regulations concerning the co-star roles in the Screen Actors Guild (SAG).
As a dedicated actor, I have seen the unfair categorization of roles firsthand. Co-star auditions, which are supposed to be a stepping stone in an actor's career, have increasingly taken on the scope and responsibilities of guest star roles without corresponding pay or recognition. In the past week alone, I received over a dozen of such audition notifications which were essentially guest star auditions in disguise. This situation not only undervalues our contributions but also undermines the essence of our profession as livelihoods are at stake.
Currently, the lines between a co-star and guest star role are blurred, creating an unsustainable environment for those trying to make a living. According to SAG standards, co-star roles are minor and typically bring in considerably lower compensation compared to guest star roles, even when they demand similar effort and time commitments. For instance, while a guest star might earn upwards of $10,000 for a single episode, a co-star's compensation may be just a fraction of that.
The lack of distinction doesn't just affect individual actors; it impacts the quality and fairness of the industry at large. When co-star roles are misused, it limits opportunities and suppresses fair wages, making it nearly impossible for actors to sustain themselves purely through their craft.
We need SAG to take decisive actions and open the conversation:
1. Implement clear guidelines and definitions distinguishing co-star from guest star roles, ensuring that roles are categorized correctly.
2. Enforce a standardized pay scale that reflects the actual demands and contributions of the role, not just its title.
3. Regular audits of production contracts to prevent exploitation through misrepresentation of roles.
These steps will not only protect the rights of actors but also ensure a fair and thriving industry for future generations. Actors, like other skilled professionals, deserve the opportunity to earn a fair living from their hard work and talent.
I urge fellow actors, industry professionals, and supporters of the arts to join me in calling on the Screen Actors Guild to regulate co-star roles effectively. Sign this petition to demand a change and protect the livelihood of dedicated actors everywhere.
