I am writing this not only on my behalf, but as a concerned resident of Baltimore where all of us are feeling the pinch of uncontrolled, skyrocketing monthly electricity bills from BGE. This escalation in bills has only accelerated ever since an increase implemented in January 2025, with another one projected in June this year. It is evident to all of us that BGE, having monopolized the electricity market in our city, keeps inflating our bills with no significant improvement in our services.

In Maryland, residential electricity rates are 16.8% higher than the national average, further accentuating the issue at hand. We also can't ignore the fact that the majority of US states have adopted some level of utility deregulation, allowing consumers to choose their electricity providers, presenting a model for potential change.

Studies have shown that areas with monopoly utilities often struggle with disproportionately high rates. This is the reality to what BGE has subjected us: uncompetitive rates and no option to switch providers. This situation strips us of our power as consumers to choose and negotiate our own rates.

We, therefore, passionately urge the local government and regulatory bodies to investigate this matter thoroughly. We plea for measures to be taken in controlling BGE's exuberant billing rates and breaking their monopoly over electricity in Baltimore.
