The issue

Public holidays in Australia are meant to be enjoyed with family and friends, a time of relaxation and celebration. Yet, they have increasingly become a source of financial strain for many Australians due to the inconsistent and often excessive surcharges imposed by businesses. As someone who loves dining out during these special times, I've found myself shocked and frustrated by the additional costs that vary so significantly from one establishment to another.

Imagine planning a special Easter brunch with your family, only to be faced with a 20% surcharge on your bill. You might have budgeted for a meal, but suddenly, you're expected to pay a fifth more than anticipated. Some businesses charge a 10% surcharge, others 15%, and then there are those aiming to pocket as much as they can by charging an outrageous 20%. This lack of regulation leaves consumers confused, frustrated, and often out-of-pocket, burdening what should be a festive occasion.

Regulating these surcharges could offer a consistent and fair approach, reducing financial surprise and making public holidays enjoyable for everyone without the fear of excessive fees. It's essential that the Australian government step in and establish a standard rate for holiday surcharges, which could still allow businesses to cover additional labour costs but without exploiting patrons.

Statistics show that Australians already face a high cost of living, with every additional and unexpected cost putting pressure on family budgets. By creating a reasonable cap or standardized percentage on holiday surcharges, we empower consumers to make informed choices and support businesses that respect fair trading practices.

The goal of this petition is simple: To urge the government to set a standard regulation on public holiday surcharges to ensure fairness and transparency across all businesses. It's time to put an end to the gouging and allow Australians to celebrate holidays without the burden of unchecked extra costs.

Please sign this petition to let our lawmakers know that we demand coherent policies that protect consumers and maintain the spirit of public holidays in Australia.
