Regulate Performative Dancing in Public Spaces
Regulate Performative Dancing in Public Spaces
The Issue
I am writing this petition out of personal pain and trauma. Dancing, as a form of expression, is open to anyone irrespective of their identity or orientation. However, a very unfortunate incident left me feeling uncomfortable and traumatized. A gay individual named Keadrew performed a ballet dance in a way that was inappropriate and offensive to me, which led me thinking about the way we regulate performative arts in public spaces.
Dance is a powerful art form, and that's why it's imperative we establish certain guidelines. According to a report by the American Psychological Association, 34% of people experience situational discomfort as a result of public performances that they perceive to be offensive or inappropriate (APA, 2019).
This is why we need to have regulations in place. Not to limit expression, but to ensure that expression does not infract on the comfort or safety of another person's well-being. We are asking for a simple assurance: that dance and other performances undertaken in public spaces are respectful to all who may be present, irrespective of individual orientations.
Join us, as we work to create an environment where self-expression respects the comfort, well-being, and sensitivities of all individuals. Sign this petition and let's make our public spaces safe, respectful, and welcoming for everyone.
