Regulate Moving Companies in Canada - Moving Scams

The Issue

The ongoing moving company scams in Canada continues to victimize people.  The most common scam is to provide a low estimate, and then when they have all of the property in their truck, they demand more in cash, or they hold the property for ransom.  2 Burley Men Moving has been withholding our entire household property including personal property, and federal documents, for almost a year and a half.  When 2 Burley Men refused to return our property, we discovered that moving companies throughout Canada are not regulated, and moving companies have been victimizing people for years.  There are many videos on youtube that have exposed some of these companies.

Some of the scams include misleading estimates, holding property for ransom, extorting, damaged property, and missing property.  In Toronto, the RCMP were raiding storage units full of peoples property and arresting, and prosecuting these companies. This petition is primarily to encourage our member of parliament to lobby for regulation of these companies federally.

When we made the hard decision to stand up to 2 Burley Men Moving here in B.C and take it to court; we discovered that canadians actually have very few rights. Provincial court Judge A. Tam decided that these moving companies have the right to withhold people's property even though it is clearly against our Bill of Rights.  Judge Tam instructed 2 Burley Men to continue to hold our property until we pay them $13,000 on an initial estimate of $3500.  If we want to appeal, then we cannot get our stuff for at least another year, because an appeal requires that we pay that money to the courts and not the moving company.

When we reached out to politicians and other legislative bodies, they refused to address this issue, or provide an avenue to have this industry regulated.  When we tried to file an appeal in Supreme Court and address the $13,000 to be paid to 2 Burley men instead of the courts, it was thrown out because the complicated court documents were not completed properly.  If we are to pursue this issue in Supreme Court as well, and fight to hold these companies accountable, then we will require a lawyer.  This will cost at least $20,000.  We have set up a gofundme should anyone want to support our endeavor and hopefully protect others from going through this same hardship.  Any contribution is appreciated, no matter how small.  The link is https://gofund.me/0bf368e3
