Regulate halal slaughterhouses in the UK

The Issue

As someone who deeply cares for the welfare of animals, I am appalled by the practices observed in some halal slaughterhouses across the UK. Growing up surrounded by animals, I've always believed in treating them with respect and compassion. It is distressing to know that while many strive to ensure humane slaughter practices, certain facilities operate in a way that contradicts these values. We are a nation of animal lovers and have a responsibility to ensure that all animals, including those destined for consumption, are treated humanely.

Current UK law permits religious exemptions from stunning prior to slaughter, which is a departure from standard practices aimed at minimizing animal suffering. This is especially concerning in halal slaughterhouses where these exemptions are often exercised. A 2019 report by the Food Standards Agency indicated that more than 80% of halal animals were stunned before slaughter, yet there remain many that are subjected to unnecessary pain and distress without stunning.

We demand that the government take immediate action to enforce stricter regulations on halal slaughter practices. This includes requiring pre-slaughter stunning in all facilities without exception, to adhere to the standards of humane treatment that most people in the UK expect. Introducing mandatory CCTV footage in all slaughterhouses can also help in ensuring transparency and accountability. Furthermore, a stringent inspection regime should be implemented to ensure adherence to potential new legislation.

Supporting this petition means standing up for our nation's values of compassion and care for all living creatures. Signing this petition is a step towards ensuring all animals in the UK can be treated with decency and humanity, even in their final moments. Please join me in urging the UK government to mandate humane treatment in halal slaughterhouses, and to ensure the laws are enforced with transparency and rigor.
